Students are allowed to check out two books at a time.
Students may read and test on books at any level. However their AR average book level must remain above their lowest STAR ZPD level. Teachers and Media Center staff will help to monitor student choices to ensure that a student’s average stays within their ZPD and that they will experience success with Accelerated Reader. Students will be tested at the beginning of the school year to determine their STAR ZPD level.
Students may check out a third book if it is for a special classroom project. The classroom teacher will notify the media center of any special projects.
Students may check out non-AR books only if they already have an AR book, and they are working towards their AR point goal. Once a student has earned their points for the nine weeks, they may have non-AR books with no restrictions.
Students are required to have their reading log, tracker and barcode to turn in or check out a book.
Fiction and nonfiction books have a checkout period of two weeks. Reference books and periodicals have a checkout period of one day. Newspapers are not available for checkout. Audiobooks are available for two week checkouts to students with permission from their language teachers. Students must provide their own headphones/earbuds.
Books are allowed to be renewed two times.
Students will record the due date in the back of their books. Late fees are $.05 per day.
Students must pay for damaged or lost books. If damage is extensive and the book is no longer readable, the full book price will be charged. Other damage fines will vary depending on the extent of the damage.
Students are required to pay for lost bar codes and labels ($1.00 each).
Notices of fines will be sent by e-mail to classroom teachers at the end of each month. Students will be informed of their fines and overdue books by their homeroom teacher. Fine notices should be recorded by the student on their reading log. Printed fines slips will only be sent home during the last month of school.
When students owe $1.00 or more they will not be allowed to checkout books until the fines are paid. Payment plans may be arranged for students owing large fines due to lost or damaged books.
If a student loses or damages their barcode scan card they will be charged $.50 for a replacement.
Students with overdue books will not be allowed to check out additional books until the overdue books are returned or renewed.
When students change schools, we ask them to please return our library books to KMIS.
