Exploring Business Technologies

September 21, 2009

Today, the students discussed the difference between a for profit and not
for profit business.  The students completed the activity called
"What is a non-profit business anyway?"  The students also
reviewed the difference between a service business and a product business.
They will work on more activities in the next few days before a test is
given.

September 22, 2009

The students reviewed over the Power Point Slides.  They started working
on the activity sheet called Business Then and Now.  They were asked to
write down the old name for the job and the current name.  They were asked
to write down what products or services were performed from the job.

September 23, 2009

The students reviewed over Objective 1.03 in preparation for their test
tomorrow.  The students also completed the activity sheet called
Classifing Businesses.  They had to determine if the business was a
for-profit or not for-profit.  In addition, they had to determine if the
company name was a service provider, product or a combination of product
and service.

September 24, 2009

Objective 1.03 Test was given along with 5 written response questions.
The students also worked on their weekly article summary.

September 25, 2009

Today, we started on Objective 2.01.  The students were introduced to
different types of economic systems and types of resources.  The students
learned first hand about scarcity when I drew names for 8 candy bars.  The
rest of the students were either disappointed or upset.  I explained to
them that countries allocate who gets what and when they get the product.
The students who did not get a candy bar received some gum instead.

September 28, 2009

The class took notes from the PowerPoint slides and completed the
Crossword from Friday.

September 29, 2009

The students started working on the Comparative Systems Activity Sheet.
The students are using the CIA web-site to research the United States,
North Korea, and Chad.  This will probably take 2-3 days to complete.

September 30, 2009

The students completed the Comparative Systems Activity Sheet.  Today was
also picture day.

October 6, 2009

The students participated in an auction.  A can of Coke was auctioned off
until it reached a price that no student wanted to pay.  The students took
notes from Power Point Objective 2.02 Supply and Demand Graphs.  Key Terms
were discussed.

October 7, 2009

The students used graph paper to draw a supply and demand graph.  The
students learned the terms of supply curve, demand curve and equilibrium.
In addition, the students should be able to interpret the graph

October 8, 2009

The students started the Lemonade Stand Project.  This will take 3 days to
complete.  Today, they played the interactive game on the internet.  They
were able to decide what price to charge, how many lemons and sugar to put
in the pitcher of lemonade.  Some students made some money while others
ran out of money and had to file for bankruptcy.

October 9, 2009

The students started working on their Power Points for this project.  They
will present their slides on Monday.

October 12, 2009

Most students completed that Power Points for the Lemonade Stand Project.
There will be a short quiz tomorrow about Supply and Demand Graphs.

October 13, 2009

The students watched a video called In Plain English.  This video was an
overview of the Federal Reserve.  Afterwards, the students took a short
quiz about this video.

October 14, 2009

The students took notes about the Federal Reserve and their
responsibilities such as raising or lowering interest rates.  Afterwards,
they looked at the Federal Reserve Kids page to learn some more about the
Fed.

October 15, 2009

The students took notes about the Stock Market.  There was an opportunity
for students to research corporations who sell stock.

October 19, 2009

The students learned more about stocks and bonds.  They also learned how
to read a stock table.

October 20, 2009

The students read an article from the NY Times about e-commerce.  They
answered questions with partners.  This was turned in for a daily grade.

October 21, 2009

The students took the Objective 2.02 & 2.03 test.  They also completed
the How to Read a Stock Table.

October 22, 2009

Review Objective 2.01 in preparation for the mid-term.

October 26, 2009

Review Objective 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, & 2.03 in preparation for the
mid-term.

November 2, 2009 & November 3, 2009

The students started working on the Famous Entrepreneur Project.  They
chose an entrepreneur and reasearch successful characteristics and
personal skills which made them successful.  This will take 2 days to
complete.  I also reviewed over the Power Point slides.

November 4, 2009

The students showed their PowerPoint presentations about their Famous
Entrepreneur.

November 5, 2009

The students took a short quiz about the successful characteristics of
entrepreneurs.

November 6, 2009

The students played a business simulation game called Johnny Money.  They
are to operate a store for 24 months.

November 9, 2009

The students were introduced to Accounting.  They learned more about Balance Sheets, Income Statements, and Statement of Change in Owners Equity.  In addition, they learned the basics of math
in accounting.

November 10, 2009

The 8th graders went on a field trip.

Veteran's Day/Holiday

November 12, 2009

The students reviewed the 3 statements which an accountant prepares.  The students were introduced to activities in accounting, banking and finance.

November 13, 2009

The students took a quiz about accounting.  The worked on some worksheets to help them better understand the activities involved with accounting, banking and finance.

November 16, 2009 & November 17, 2009

The students were introduced to careers as an accountant.  They started researching different careers.  This will take 2 days to complete.

November 18, 2009

The students discussed the following careers (stockbroker and investment councelor).  They learned the differences with each job.  There was a short review.

November 19, 2009

The students discussed the differences between an accountant, CPA and a bookkeeper.  There was a review for the Objective test on 11/20/09.

November 20, 2009

The students took the Objective 4.01 test.  Afterwards, they worked on their weekly article.

November 23, 2009

Introduced students to Levels of Management and Functions of Management.  The students completed a triangle and listed the levels of management along with job titles for each level.  This was turned in for a grade.

November 24, 2009

The students reviewed over the PowerPoint Slides and I discussed how a manager uses delegation as a form of motivation.

Thanksgiving Break

November 30, 2009

The students were placed in group of 4.  They read a scenerio that a manager might encounter and as a group they brainstormed ideas how they would handle the situation as a group.  The reporter of the group read the scenerio and discussed what ideas the group came up with.

December 1, 2009

The students started researching careers involved with Business Management and Administration.  They completed an activity sheet after researching the careers.

December 2, 2009

The students reviewed the PowerPoints and the review questions during the class period.  They will have their Objective 4.02 Test tomorrow.

December 3, 2009

The students took the Objective 4.02 test.

December 4, 7, 8, 2009

The students starting working on their final project.  This will take about 2 class periods to complete.  They will be researching an Information Technology company and create a Power Point which highlights the following points:
  • Company Type
  • Sales
  • 1-year sales growth
  • Net Income
  • CEO  
  • Examples of Products
December 9, 2009

The students were introduced to activities in Information Technology.  After taking notes, the students worked on some questions which pertain to the PowerPoint 4.03 slides.  This was turned in for a grade.

December 10, 2009

The students worked on a worksheet which contained some key terms for this objective.  They also worked on another activity sheet which emphasizes the activities in Information Technology.

December 14, 2009

The students looked up Careers in Information Technology by using the Occupational Handbook from the Dept of Labor.  They discussed the Nature of Work and Salary.  There was a short review for the Objective 4.03 test which is tomorrow.

December 15, 2009

The students reviewed their PowerPoints for 5 minutes and then they took a test.







Keyboarding

September 21, 2009

Today, the students learned new reaches P & V.  In addition, we
reviewed over computer components and input/output devices.  The students
were given a timed
typing to determine their Gross Words A Minute.

September 22, 2009

The students learned new reaches q and the comma.  Further review was
given about the components and input/output devices.  The students are now
typing each line twice.

September 23, 2009

The students learned new reaches of z and colon.  Further review was given
about the components and input/output devices.

September 24, 2009

The students learned new reaches of the CAPS LOCK, TAB, and ?.  Further
review was given about the components and input/output devices.  Students
also participated in timed typing.

September 25, 2009

The students keyed Activity 8E and turned in for a grade.  There were no
new reaches or keys learned today.  It was strictly reinforcement and
review over computer components.

September 28, 2009

The students completed Activity 8E after proofreading their work.  The
students learned new reaches of apostrophe, hyphen, & quotation mark.
Review was given about the components and input/output devices.

September 29, 2009

The students completed Activity 9A, 9B & 9D.  They started typing
paragraphs.

September 30, 2009

The students completed Activity 10A, 10B, & 10C.  This was review and
continued practice for all the new reaches.

October 6, 2009

The students learned new reaches of 1 & 8.  They completed Activity
13A, 13B, & 13C.

October 7, 2009

The students learned new reaches of 5,7, & 3.  They completed Activity
14B and 14C.

October 8, 2009

The students learned new reaches of 6 & 2.  They completed Activity
14D and 14E.

October 12, 2009

The students learned new reaches of $ and !.  They completed Activity 17A
and 17B.  There was some review for their test on Wednesday.

The students took the Objective 2.01 Test.

The students reviewed over their alpha/numberic reaches.  They completed
Activity 20 B & Activity 21 B.  These activities were turned in for a
grade.

October 20, 2009

The students had to take a timed typing test for a grade today.  I also
introduced them to the numeric keypad.

October 21, 2009

The students completed the numeric keypad exercise activity worksheet.
This was turned in for a grade.

October 22, 2009

The students worked on the Computers Systems Review game in preparation
for their mid term.

October 26, 2009

The students reviewed for their Mid-term.  They looked over Objective 2.01
test.

November 2, 2009 & November 3, 2009

The students started working on the Proofreading PowerPoint assignment.
This will take 2 days to complete.  I reviewed over the PowerPoint slides
and reviewed over the Proofreader symbols.

November 4, 2009

The students completed a worksheet titled "Using Proofreader
Marks".  Afterwards, we reviewed over the proofreader symbols and
what each symbols means.  

November 5, 2009

The students completed the Editing a Rough Draft activity.  In this
activity, the made the corrections from the proofreader marks.

November 6, 2009

The students took Objective 3.01 test.  After the test, they worked on
some worksheets to help them understand subject/verb recognition a little
better.

November 9, 10, & 12, 2009

The students worked on the Formatting and Edittng PowerPoint Assignment.  There are 40 questions for them to type and look up the answer.

November 13, 2009

The students started working on Formatting and Editing worksheet assignments.  These worksheets will be turned in for a daily grade.  This should take 2 days to complete.

November 16, 2009

The students completed the worksheet assignments.  They were able to review some for their Objective 4.01 test on Thursday.

November 17, 2009

The students worked on the PowerPoint Assignment and we started reviewing for their Objective 4.01 test on Thusday.

November 18, 2009

We discussed the answers for the PowerPoint Assignment and reviewed for the last time.

November 19, 2009

The students took the Objective 4.01 test.  Afterwards, they started typing the Vocabulary and Definitions for Objective 4.02.

November 20, 2009

The students started working on the PowerPoint Assignment for Objective 4.02.  Some students started working on the activities for this objective.

November 23, 2009

The students were finishing up on the Paragraph Format Activities.  These were turned in for a grade.

November 24, 2009

The students reviewed over the PowerPoint Slides for Objective 4.02.  They were given a short quiz to test their knowledge.

November 30, 2009

The students went over the PowerPoint Slides for the final review.  They will be taking the Objective 4.02 Test tomorrow.

December 1, 2009

The students took the Objective 4.02 test.  Afterwards, some of the students started working on the PowerPoint Question Assigment for Objective 4.04.

December 2, 2009

The students were introduced to tables and spacing around tables.  The students typed the key vocabulary terms and also finished up on the PowerPoint Question Assignment.  

December 3, 2009

The students started typing tables from their typing textbooks on Page 96.  They completed Tables 1,2, & 3.

December 4, 2009

Today was FUNDAY for those students who sold products for the athletic department.  The rest of the students who stayed behind worked on some more tables for practice.

December 7, 2009

The students completed Activity 31A Table 1, 2, 3 and Actitiy 33C Table 1, 2.

December 8, 2009

The students reviewed over PowerPoint Slides and took a Table Quiz.  They also worked on a Table activity.

The students completed the Table activity and turned in for a grade.  There was review for Objective 4.04 test tomorrow.

The students took the Objective 4.04 test.  After the test, they started working on the PowerPoint Activity assignment for reports.

December 14, 2009

The students reviewed the PowerPoint slides for Objective 4.05.  They typed an activity on Page 71 for an Unbound Report.  

December 15, 2009

The students typed Activity 26A and turned in for a grade.  They also reviewed the PowerPoints for Objective 4.05.

Exploring Career Decisions

October 8, 2009

Today was rotation day for the 6th grades.  I presented my PowerPoint
presentation and went over classroom rules as well as the Computer
Internet Usage contract.  The students took this paper home to be signed
by their parents/guardians.  The students will receive a grade of 100 once
they turn it back in.  They will have until October 12 to get this
completed.

October 12, 2009

Students completed some self-assessments about themselves.  They also took
down notes about interests and listed some examples of interests.  We
started on categorizing interest today but did not complete this activity.

October 19, 2009

The students were introduced to Objective 2.01.  They will be learning
more about personalities and learning styles.  The students completed an
activity sheet about Personality Traits.

October 20, 2009

Students took notes about Learning Styles.  In addition, we finished up on
the Personality Traits activity sheet.

October 21, 2009

Students completed taking notes about Learning Styles.

October 22, 2009

The students got on the computer and completed the Learning Styles
activity from www.ikeepbookmarks.com.

October 26, 2009

The students completed the Classify the Learning Style activity sheet.
They then completed the Objective 1.02 test.

November 2, 2009

The students took notes about personal skills and transferable skills.
The students completed a skit about personal skills.

November 3, 2009

The students took Objective 1.03 test.

November 4, 2009

The students began a new Objective today.  The are in the beginning
stadges of career exploration.

November 5, 2009

The students took notes about the 4 career categories.  They also viewed
some Career Builder commercial TV Ads.

November 6, 2009

The students started researching careers that match the 4 career
categories.  In addition, they started research 2 careers of their
interests.

November 9, 2009

The students were introduced to the Holland Code.  RIASEC Personality Code will help them match potential careers which match their personality.  

November 10, 2009

The students were split into 6 groups.  In this group activity, the students were able to discuss job titles to see which RIASEC personality code would be the match.  Afterwards, the students posted the job title on the correct poster board.

November 11, 2009

Veteran's Day/Holiday

November 12, 2009 & November 13, 2009

The students worked on the activity sheet titled My Career Choices.  They had to research 3 jobs that match their RIASEC personality code.  They looked up the job description, tasks to perform the job, education and training and salary.

November 16, 2009

The students started writing their career paper about one job that matches their RIASEC personality code.  They were able to use other resources to look up more information about the job.  This paper will be due by November 19.

November 17, 2009

The students were presented a PowerPoint about Networking and Interviewing tips.  They also practiced the Business Handshake.

November 18, 2009

The students needed more time to complete the paper about the career that matches their personality.

November 19, 2009

The students were given sample interview questions.  I displayed some action words to use when answering their interview questions.  Some students, practicipated in a role play with the interview.

November 20, 2009

Interview Day!!!  The students were called to the front of the class.  They demonstrated the business handshake and greeting.  The answered 4-5 questions from the sample interview questions from the day before.

November 23, 2009

A new set of 6th graders were introduced the the classroom rules and procedures.  They completed an index card with their name, parents/guardians name, and a good contact number.

November 24, 2009

I reviewed with the students about fire drill, tornado drills, and Code 300 drills.  I assigned students responsibilties like placing red or green cards on the windows or doors.  I went over the web-site which I keep all my bookmarks.

November 25-27

Thanksgiving Break

November 30, 2009

The students listed 10 things that they enjoy.  They had a chance to tell the class some of their interests.

December 1, 2009

The students were given some key definitions for Objective 1.01.  We started listed their interest in Activities, Subjects, and Hobbies.  Some students had an opportunity to write on the SmartBoard.

December 2, 2009

The students were introduced to the Categories of Interest and they were given examples of each.  They completed an activity sheet titled, PEOPLE, DATA, THINGS, AND IDEAS.  They were able to decided which were their top 2 categories.

December 3, 2009

The students were introduced to attitudes.  The students were asked to list 2 times they had possitive attitudes and 2 times they had negative attitudes.  The students were able to discuss to the class about their situations.

December 4, 2009

Today is FUNDAY.  The students who were left behind took some notes about values and later they watched DILBERT on the television.

December 7, 2009

The students took some notes about values and we reviewed over Objective 1.01.  They will have a test tomorrow.

The students viewed Objective 1.02 PowerPoints.  They worked on an activity sheet about Personality.  There was some discussion about what type of personality that they would want to work for them if they owned their own business.

The students took some notes about Learning Styles.  Some students participated in demonstrating Sports in Motion.

December 15, 2009

The students finished taking notes about Learning Styles.  They started working on some activities involving Learning Styles.
