Learning Sight Words
Our kindergarten students will work on learning sight words this year. We have 36 words in the list. Below you will find some ideas of ways to make learning the words a little more fun.
Yours and Mine Card Game: Make flash cards for each of the sight words. Sit with your child and tell them you are going to have a reading contest using the cards. There are 36 sight words, but that may be too many to begin with. You may adjust the number of cards you are working with each time. Start with a smaller deck of maybe 10 or 20 cards. If they can read the word on the card then they can keep the card in their pile. If they can't read it then you get to keep the card in your pile. After going through the deck of cards, count and see who has the most. The object of the game is for them get all the cards in their pile and you have none in yours. Encourage them to play
again and try to increase the number of cards they have in their deck. The game is simple, but they usually like to play it. Any time playing (and learning) with their parents is time well spent!
Word Search: Select a sight word to focus on. Give your child a sheet of newspaper or a magazine and have them find the word in the print. Let them circle the words with a marker or pen. The more they see it the easier it will be to recognize it in books.
Shaving Cream Fun: Select a sight word to focus on. Put a small amount of shaving cream on the table or on a small plate or tray. Have your child write the word in the shaving cream. Be sure they read the words to you as they play. Most children enjoy this activity. This activity also works well using pudding. You just need to decide which mess you wouldn't mind cleaning up.
