Drama III/IV & Honors Drama

Prerequisite:  Students must successfully complete Theatre I & II in order to sign up for Drama III/IV.  Students must also audition for Honors Drama, and have successfully completed Theatre Arts I and II, as well as have teacher recommendation.  As this is a performing arts class and this group is responsible for the mainstage productions, primarily, this is highly competitive and all students will not qualify on the basis of "good grades" alone.  In addition, this course has been designed to create opportunities for student-initiated learning, not just busywork.  You may only receive two (2) Honors credits in any fine arts area.

The Honors Drama curriculum has been developed to prepare those students who seek to learn and seriously develop in the craft of theatre arts.  This class is designed to allow students to initiate projects and learning experiences and to report those experiences in creative ways of expression (e.g., journaling, PowerPoint presentations, original movies, student-directed mainstage productions, songwriting, playwriting, etc.).

During Honors Drama the students are required to participate in ALL mainstage productions for a grade, as either cast or crew.  Students are required to be in attendance at all shows during a show's run from open to close, or they will receive a grade deduction.  (This is listed in the registration booklet before students register for the class.)

There is some afterschool rehearsal involved (which is announced in advance of the showtimes), and showtimes are afterschool for mainstage performances.  These shows are for the school and community and are an important part of the theatrical students' training.

This dynamic course is an awesome opportunity for those students who plan to pursue theatre arts after high school, and in fact, in the fall of the year, students are given the opportunity to audition for NCTC's (North Carolina Theatre Conference) Unified College Auditions.  Over 30 NC colleges and universities are in one location (TBD by the NCTC committee) for auditions for college theatre programs.  We have successfully had several CHS students to be given scholarships who are now studying theatre at the college level after attending this audition.

Honors Drama is a highly competitive and rewarding experience in the fine arts department.
