Hello class of 2014!  I hope your school year has gotten off to a great start!  This will be a year of lots of dates and deadlines.  There are several attachments to this email.  The first attachment you should have received in homeroom.  It is a list of dates for senior year. save the dates 2013.doc It also contains contact information for faculty members who handle specific senior year events.    If you do not have some sort of calendar or "calendar device" NOW would be a good time to purchase one!  I would also recommend having a special place to keep track of all your computer passwords and log-in information.  Everything is online now and there will be lots of passwords to remember.

We will have a senior class meeting on Thursday, September 12.   We will be covering lots of information that you need to know about your senior year and the college application process.  The Josten's representative will be here as well to discuss ordering graduation supplies.  A parent meeting about the college application process will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 6:00 pm in the CHS media center.

Activity Sheet
The 2nd attachment is a student activity sheet. activity sheet.doc If you plan to apply to college and/or apply for scholarships you will need to complete this form.  The application process always requires letters of recommendation.  When you ask someone to write a letter of recommendation for you, you will need to hand the person your activity sheet.  This helps the recommender know all the wonderful things you have done and helps them write a better letter about you!  You may choose to come up with your own form, but please be sure to include the same information that is shown on the one I've attached.  Please bring me a copy of your activity sheet.  Many colleges require a counselor statement.  I will need to know about you to be able to complete these required forms.

Transcripts--Important---Please Read!!
Every college application will require that you also send a transcript.  I am sure most of you have heard that this summer the state of NC switched to a new data system called PowerSchool.  This system contains all student data including transcripts.  At this point we do not have access to transcripts in the new system.  We are anticipating being able to process transcript requests by the end of September.  If you must have a transcript before that date please come and see me.  Any transcript we can give you at this point is from the old system.  It will not include your senior year courses, SAT scores, and rank is not accurate. Be aware that if you request an electronic transcript to be sent from CFNC it will be from the old system and will not be accurate.  Most colleges do not have application deadlines until October.  We advise you to wait until you hear from us to make a transcript request.  In the mean time, the 3rd attachment is a transcript release form.  Transcript Release Form 2.docPlease complete this form, have your parents sign it and return it to the guidance office before the end of September.

SAT
The deadline to register for the October 5th SAT is next Friday, September 7th.  Register online at sat.org/register.  If you receive free and reduced lunch you can see me to receive a fee waiver for this test.  When you register, you will have to upload a photo of yourself.  Remember--if you are planning to attend a community college you do not have to take the SAT or ACT.  Community Colleges have their own placement tests and they are free!

Remind 101
Scholarship information will be emailed and announced on the intercom.  You can also receive text messages about scholarship updates.  Standard text message rates apply.  From your cell phone send a text message to 424-543-6798 with the message @8ed15       See the 4th attachment for more information. remind 101.pdf

Scholarships
Scholarships will be announced on the intercom and listed on the website on the Guidance page  under Scholarship Announcements.  Other good scholarship sources are fastweb.com, cfnc.com, and collegeboard.com.  The financial aid office of your prospective college is another good source for scholarships for your particular school.

Listed below are some scholarships that are available at this time.  Usually the scholarships that come early in the year are highly competitive or nation-wide competitions.  The spring semester will bring more local scholarships.

There is a scholarship notebook in my office.  Each scholarship that I announce will be listed in the notebook.  Many of the scholarships are online and you will not need any paperwork from me to complete the applications.  There are a number of scholarships that require information from me (paper applications, etc).  I would recommend that you sign your name in the book for all scholarships you are working on.  This will let me know who I need to contact if I am informed of changes to the application.  It is your responsibility to contact me about the scholarships you sign-up for.  Please do not sign-up in the book and expect me to track you down to give you an application.  Make sure you see me!
