Listed below are some scholarships that are available at this time. Usually the scholarships that come early in the year are highly competitive or nation-wide competitions. The spring semester will bring more local scholarships. Scholarships will be announced on the intercom and listed on the school's website on the Guidance Department's page under Scholarship Announcements. Other good scholarship sources are fastweb.com, cfnc.com, and collegeboard.com. The financial aid office of your prospective college is another good source for scholarships for your particular school.
There is a scholarship notebook in my office. Each scholarship that I announce will be listed in the notebook. Many of the scholarships are online and you will not need any paperwork from me to complete the applications. There are a number of scholarships that require information from me (paper applications, etc). I would recommend that you sign your name in the book for all scholarships you are working on. This will let me know who I need to contact if I am informed of changes to the application. It is your responsibility to contact me about the scholarships you sign-up for. Please do not sign-up in the book and expect me to track you down to give you an application. Make sure you see me!

Hello class of 2013! I hope your school year has gotten off to a great start! This will be a year of lots of dates and deadlines. If you do not have some sort of calendar or "calendar device" NOW would be a good time to purchase one! I would also recommend having a special place to keep track of all your computer passwords and log-in information. Everything is online now and there will be lots of passwords to remember.
We will have a senior class meeting tomorrow morning in the gym. We will be covering lots of information that you need to know about your senior year and the college application process. The Josten's representative will be here as well to discuss ordering graduation supplies. A parent meeting about the college application process will be held one evening coming soon. That date will be announced shortly.
Activity Sheet
Attached is a student activity sheet. If you plan to apply to college and/or apply for scholarships you will need to complete this form. The application process always requires letters of recommendation. When you ask someone to write a letter of recommendation for you, you will need to hand the person your activity sheet. This helps the recommender know all the wonderful things you have done and helps them write a better letter about you! You may choose to come up with your own form, but please be sure to include the same information that is shown on the one I've attached. Please bring me a copy of your activity sheet. Many colleges require a counselor statement. I will need to know about you to be able to complete these required forms.
Transcripts
Every college application will require that you also send a transcript. If you are applying to a NC college, you will need to send your transcript through cfnc.org. You do NOT have to apply through cfnc. You can just send your transcript through the Transcript Manager. This feature allows you to send an initial transcript and a final transcript. You can actually track when the college downloads it so you know it has been received. If you have not created an account already, please go ahead and do so. If you have had an account previously but you can't remember your log-in information you can try the password retrieval process or you can come and see me. I am sometimes able to retrieve your log-in information and enable you to create a new password. Again, this is the way
to send a transcript to a NC college!! If you are applying to an out of state school, you will need to request that a transcript be sent by the guidance office. Mrs. Lisa Dedmon is the guidance secretary. You can make these requests with her beginning September 15th. Typically there is a two day processing time. In order for us to mail your transcript to a college or scholarship program, we will need for your parent to sign a transcript release form. We must have this form on file in our office before we can mail a transcript for you. If you had one signed last year, you will still need to have another one signed this year. The release is only good for the current school year. These forms are available in the guidance office.
We will begin sending transcripts after September 15. If you send one before September 15th through cfnc, please know that the rank that is listed on the transcript may not be accurate. We will run rank for the current year by September 15th. This will give us time to check over transcripts, to enter in summer grades, and to receive grades for students who have transferred to us this year. You will receive an unofficial copy of your transcript after September 15th for use in filling out your applications.
Scholarships
Keep watching your email. The first list will be emailed soon! Scholarships will be announced on the intercom and listed on the website on the Guidance page under Scholarship Announcements. Other good scholarship sources are fastweb.com, cfnc.com, and collegeboard.com. The financial aid office of your prospective college is another good source for scholarships for your particular school.
I look forward to working with you and getting to know you better this year. I hope you have a happy Friday!
