Leadership and Summer Opportunities at Crest High School
Governor's School
The oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas. The school is held for six weeks at Salem College and Meredith College. The program offers a non-credit curriculum for 800 students statewide. Students choose an area of interest to study: Art, Choral Music, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Mathematics, English, French, Spanish, Natural Science, or Social Science. Eligible students must meet the academically or intellectually gifted multiple criteria as established by North Carolina Governor's School. The nomination process begins during the fall semester. Summer Ventures
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers in science and matematics. The program brings together rising juniors and seniors in residential settings for four weeks of study. Six campuses of the University of North Carolina system host SVSM; Appalachian State, East Carolina, North Carolina Central, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, and Western Carolina. Admissions to programs is based on academic ability, science and mathematics motivation, and emotional maturity. An admissions committee appointed by SVSM selects approximately 600 finalists to participate in the program. Application forms are sent to high school mathematics and science department heads and school counseling offices in mid-October and

Project Uplift
Project Uplift is a program sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that provides American Indian, African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, and students from other historically under-served communities to learn about college. Selected students are rising seniors enrolled or will be enrolled in college preparatory curriculum (including one AP class, one year of foreign language, and mathematics through Geometry or Algebra II), in the top 25% of their class, and are involved in extracurricular activities. Students spend two days on campus learning about admissions and academic opportunities at the University. It is an all-expense paid program, including meals, room, and program materials. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
NCSSM is a public, residential high school located in Durham, NC for juniors and seniors that provides specialized curriculum in the areas of math, science, and technology. Cleveland County HealthCare System--"Code Teen" Summer Program
Summer volunteer program for students interested in the medical field. Program entails a 2-hour event twice a month that will introduce teens to many career paths in the healthcare field. Will offer a behind-the-scenes look at many departments, opportunity to meet and talk with different healthcare professionals, and opportunity to find out about healthcare curricula in area colleges and universities. Interested students must be rising 10th to 12th graders with good GPA and no discipline problems. Application with recommendations and essay is required. SATELLITE
Science And Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow's Endeavors is a five-day summer adventure at North Carolina State University for selected high school sophomores. SATELLITE scholars are exposed to NC State's science and technology resources and have opportunity to explore future educational and career opportunities. Forty students are selected state-wide to attend the camp. Cost is $25. See Mrs. Roberts in guidance for more information.
YMCA Black Achievers
Program designed to help minorities grades 9-12 plan for college and prepare for success. Student participants choose one of the following career clusters; law and government, communication, medical, education, and business. The clusters meet once each month and attendance is required. Underclassmen who particpate in the program at least two years and maintain a 2.0 GPA are guaranteed a scholarship in their senior year. Registration Fee is $35. The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Youth Council
This council is comprised of middle and high school youth that serve as an advisory body to the Parks and Recreation Department on matters pertaining to youth of the community. Youth Council members work on projects such as: Public Awareness; Special Events; Special Projects; and Budget and Finance. The Council meets monthly with meeting times and location determined at the first organizational meeting. See Mrs. Roberts in guidance for more information.
GWU "BEST" Program
The BEST (Bringing Executives and Students Together) program is designed to bring together business owners, company executives, and community leaders in Cleveland County with local high school students for a week long educational event. Students have opportunity to hear real life stories from entrepreneurs and learn skills, such as budgeting, banking, computer proficiency, and marketing. This program is offered in the summer and applications are taken in the spring semester. See Mrs. Roberts in guidance for more information.
NC Youth Legislative Assembly
The NC Youth Legislative Assembly is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state, and national government. The three day session is patterned after the NC General Assembly. YLA is open to all North Carolina students, grades 9-12, who are interested in learning more about government and the legislative process. Attendance is limited to 200 youth. United States Senate Youth Program
Student Government Representatives are eligible to apply in their junior or senior year for this program. Two students from every state are selected to attend the one week program in Washington DC. For more information see Mrs. Roberts in guidance.
Catalyst Conference
Sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill. Eighty high school students (grades 9-11) across the state come to UNC for a weekend-long exploration of social issues affecting America's youth. Workshops, discussion groups, and activities are designed to help students become advocates for positive social change. Registration fee is $30. For more information see Mrs. Roberts in guidance.
C-CATS (Clemson's Challenge for Academically Talented Students)
Weekend programs for 9th and 10th grade students in the top 10 percent of their class. Participants take part in high-adventure group dynamics and high-performance academic workshops.
