Playing Collegiate Sports on the Division I or II Level
Any athlete planning to play at the Division I or II level in college must be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse before they are allowed to practice or play in college. There are requirements the athlete must meet for both Division I and II schools that differ, but in both situations, they are held to minimum requirements on SAT or ACT scores, the number of core courses taken and the GPA obtained through those core courses. On the website, www.ncaaclearinghouse.com, athletes can find a tremendous amount of information, including online registration, requirements for
Division I and II schools and how to calculate their core GPA. The NCAA recommends athletes who are considering playing in college register with the Clearinghouse at the beginning of their senior year. When registering, students will create a four digit pin number; they do not need to forget. Using their social security number and their pin number, they will be able to access their information at any time. Students who have used a fee waiver (they receive free or reduced lunch) for SAT or ACT can also request a fee waiver for the Clearinghouse. They should contact their guidance counselor for this option. Also, the guidance counselor needs to be aware of any students who are registering in order that they can send an official high school transcript. One last item, the NCAA Clearinghouse does require that an official copy of test scores be sent directly from the testing service (SAT or ACT). To do this, place “9999” as one of the four
places to receive test scores when registering for the test.
