Phyllis B Elmore Memorial Scholarship - Nursing major; community or four-year college; $500; Sign to receive an application.  All applications must be turned in to the guidance office by May17.

Industrial Maintenance and Automation (Jolley Electric) is offering a scholarship to a student entering electrical trades or engineering.  Sign the Blue Book and complete a General Scholarship Application.  The deadline to return the application to guidance is May 17.

Audacian Club Scholarship - Minority students; any major; must complete the General Scholarship Application and return it to guidance by April 17.

Ashley Lutz Memorial Scholarship - Minimum GPA of 3.0; nursing major; can be community college or 4-year college.  Deadline to return application to guidance is May 3.

General Scholarship Application - This is used for several of the local ones - EC Hoover, Mac Lancaster, Maybin, Upper Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, Polkville School Alumni and SL Coon.  It must be turned in to the guidance office by May 13.

Reminder - State Employees' Credit Union "People Helping People"--One student from Burns will receive a $10,000 scholarship ($2500/year renewable for 4 years) to attend one of the 16 public four-year universities. Student must be a NC resident, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and show the character of a person willing to help others through leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Essay required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications are due in guidance April 15.  This deadline has been extended until April 22.

Lutz Scholarship: Any major; must be a four-year college or university; students will complete the general scholarship application and must return it to guidance by April 9.  Five students will be selected by the scholarship committee to be interviewed by the Lutz committee.  Burns will receive a $2000 scholarship as well as a $500 runner-up.  If the recipient of the $2000 scholarship should receive more than $2000 from other scholarships it must be forfeited and given to the next alternate.

Settle Community Scholarships - any major; GPA 2.75 minimum; community or four-year college; must return to the guidance office, not to the company's address.  Deadline to return to guidance is April 10.

CC Teacher Assistants Scholarship - parent must be a member of the CC Association of Teacher Assistants.  Postmark deadline is March 29.

CC Realtors Assoc. JF Chitty High School Scholarship - $1000; GPA 2.8 minimum; any major; community or four-year college; must be returned to guidance by April 29.

Candy Arey Scholarship - $500 for females only; minimum GPA of 2.7; emphasis for students who are employed by YMCA, are members of YMCA or participants of YMCA programs.  Deadline to return the application and attachments to the Dover YMCA is March 30.

NC Association of Agriculture Fairs Scholarship - for community college or four-year college students; any major; emphasis on fair involvement (showing, volunteering in the barn, entering exhibits, etc).  Deadline to return to the Cleveland Co. Fair office is April 1.

Michael A DeMayo Scholarship is in; deadline is extended b/c Cleveland Co. Schools only received it this week; any major but lots of attachments; come by and ask for an application - they are ready.  Our deadline is March 1.

Don't forget to try to file your FAFSA online before March 1, the priority deadline for NC colleges.  FAFSA day is Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9 am to noon.  You can go to certain locations in Shelby to receive assistance. Call 866-866-CFNC to register.

Cleveland County Association of Teacher Assistants--Scholarship available for graduating senior whose parent is a member of the Cleveland County Association of Teacher Assistants.  Applicant should also have a minimum "C" average GPA and have potential for success in an institution of higher learning.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Completed applications should be mailed by the student with a postmark deadline of March 29

Cleveland Community College--offers both merit and need-based scholarships to attend CCC.  Sign the Blue Book in guidance for an application or go online to the CCC website.  Completed applications are due to Mrs. Martin March 26

Bob Kiger--The Cleveland County Choral Society offers this scholarship to seniors planning to pursue a major in music with a concentration in voice and/or choral studies that would lead them to secure an occupation using their vocal/choral directing skills. For more information about this scholarship see Mrs. Martin in the guidance office by February 12.

The Innovation Scholarship—Two $6000 scholarships for students pursuing a degree at a non-profit based college or technical school.  To apply go to www.ttecscholarship.net.  Deadline to apply is March 1.

Jagannathan Scholarship--scholarship available to graduating senior planning to enroll as a full time freshmen at one of the 16 UNC institutions.  Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need (as determined by the FAFSA).  Application is available at www.cfnc.org.  Deadline to apply is February 15.

Cecilia Music Club--scholarship to be used for private music lessons on the college level.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Student should mail completed applications before February 22.

NC Farm Bureau R.Flake Shaw--Scholarships available for seniors planning to attend a four year college/university or a community college.  Applicants should have the intention to pursue a career in agriculture or in an agriculturally-related field.  Award for four year college/university applicant is $3500 per year.  Award for community college applicant is $1000 per year.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Completed applications should be mailed by the student before March 15.

FELS--The Forgivable Education Loan for Service was established by the North Carolina General Assembly. The loan provides financial assistance to qualified students who are committed to working in North Carolina in fields designated as critical employment shortage areas (Education, Allied Health, Nursing, Medical).  Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA.  For more information about the program and to apply go to www.cfnc.org/FELS.  Deadline to apply is April 1.

Student-View--No minimum SAT/ACT score or GPA!  Applicants should log on to www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area.  Scholarships will be awarded via a random drawing of all completed applications.  Deadline to apply is April 21.

Forgivable Loans for Service – Scholarships in the areas of teaching, nursing, allied health and medicine.  It replaces Nurse Scholars and Prospective Teachers.  To apply go to CFNC.org/FELS.  Applications are available after January 1.  Deadlines vary.

Golden Leaf ScholarshipGrants valued at $12000 ($3000/yr) for public or private university in NC. Need is a factor, must submit a FAFSA (submitted between Jan 1and March 1).  Available online at CFNC.org/goldenleaf.  Deadline is March 1.

Southern Arts Society ScholarshipWrite a biography including future plans, dreams and goals for your education after high school.  Submit work, list extracurricular activities, jobs, volunteer work and any other information you feel will be helpful.  Include a copy of your transcript.  Return materials to guidance by March 20.

NC Extension and Community Association- Scholarship available for senior planning to attend a NC college or community college next fall. Application is available in the guidance office. Completed applications are due to guidance January 28.

The Dover Foundation--Scholarships ($7000) available to seniors who attend one of the four Cleveland County high schools. There will be six students selected who plan to attend Gardner-Webb University and six students selected who plan to attend any other qualified college or university. Finalists must be accepted by their college or university. Semi-finalists will be interviewed to determine final winners ($15,000). Excellent academic record, leadership activities, and character will be considered. Two letters of recommendation are required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications are due in guidance by February 26.

LeGrand-Ware-- For students attending Gardner-Webb pursuing a degree in business or business related field. Academics, leadership activities, and character will be considered. Essay and two letters of recommendation required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications are due in guidance by February 26.

Belk-Ellis--Scholarship for Cleveland or Rutherford County residents going into a business or business related major at Gardner-Webb. High academic standing, leadership activities, and character will be considered. Essay and two letters of recommendation are required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications are in guidance by February 26.

Joseph B. Freeman--Scholarship available to seniors in Cleveland County. Need, academics, and activities will be considered. Two letters of recommendation and a completed FAFSA are required. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications are due to guidance by February 26.

SEANC--State Employees Association of North Carolina offers scholarships to their members. Scholarships are available for students planning to attend a 4 year or 2 year institution and are for merit and need. Applications are available online at www.seanc.org. Completed applications are due to the scholarship chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. This is NOT the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship.  This organization requires paid membership dues. All applications must be postmarked by April 15.

State Employees' Credit Union "People Helping People"--One student from Burns will receive a $10,000 scholarship ($2500/year renewable for 4 years) to attend one of the 16 public four-year universities. The SECU Foundation also provides each NC Community College two $5,000 scholarships.Recipients are selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee at the community college. Students planning to attend community college who are interested in this scholarship should contact the financial aid office of their particular institution.

Our Family Foundation--offers scholarships for children of active duty service members who are stationed at Fort Meade, Bragg, Polk, Rucker, Riley, Sill, or Aberdeen Proving Ground. Application is available online at ourfamilyfoundation.org. Deadline to apply is February 14.

Mary Rose Mills--Linda Rankin Memorial--$2000 scholarship for graduating senior planning to attend a four year college/university in the fall, should rank in the top 10% of their class, minimum SAT score of 1700 (22 ACT composite), good character, and participation in extra-curricular activities. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications should be mailed by the student before February 1.

Clare Johnson Marley Fine Arts Scholarship--$2000 scholarship for graduating senior in a four-year degree in the fine arts, rank in the top 20% of their class, minimum SAT score of 1650 (20 ACT composite), good character, and participation in extracurricular activities. ~Applicant will need to submit proof of abilities/talents in the area of fine arts by submitting a CD/DVD or portfolio. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications should be mailed by the student before February 1.

Student Achievement Scholarship--$2000 scholarship for graduating senior who attends either a two-year or four-year college/university in the fall. ~Applicant's GPA between 2.5-3.5, SAT score between 1344-1560 (ACT composite 20-24), good character, and participation in extracurricular activities. ~Applications are available online at www.nccommunityfoundation.org. ~Completed applications should be submitted to the donor by the student before February 17

NFIB YEF Scholarship – These awards are non-renewable scholarships created to recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.  To apply go to http://www.NFIB.com/YEA.  Click on the Apply Now link.  Deadline is December 17.

The American Legion “Need a Lift?” – Scholarship and financial aid at the website www.legion.org/needalift.

NC Head Start Association--for any college bound, former Head Start student. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications are due to guidance January 3rd.

NC Child Support Council--Scholarship available for senior planning to attend a NC school of higher learning in the fall. ~Applicant's parent must be a member of the NC Child Support Council or be a client of the Child Support Program (through either Child Support Services or Clerk of Court services). Applicant must have maintained an overall C average or above during high school. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications must be received by on the NC Child Support Council by April 15.

Harry W. Clarke--One $2000 scholarship, renewable for 3 years, will be awarded to a graduating senior from a public high school in the 29 county Western NC region. Burns will select one application to submit for consideration. ~Student must attend a NC four-year college or university. ~Scholarship considers financial need, academic ability, good moral character, and community involvement. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications are due to guidance by January 15th.

William A. Hart--One $1000 scholarship, renewable for 1 year, will be awarded to a graduating senior from a public high school in the 29 county Western NC region. ~Burns may select one application to submit for consideration. ~Student must attend a NC two-year community college. ~Scholarship considers financial need, academic ability, good moral character, and community involvement. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications are due to guidance by January 15th.

Margie McCluney Hamrick Nursing Scholarship--One $1200 scholarship to senior in Cleveland County planning to pursue a 2 or 4 year degree in the nursing profession. ~Preference will be given to student with financial need. ~Other criteria include academic achievement, community involvement, and moral character. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Completed applications are due to guidance by January 15th.

Wellington Hamrick Scholarship--One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior in Cleveland County pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree in math, science, engineering, or technical field. Nursing candidates should apply to the Margie McCluney Hamrick Scholarship instead of this program. Preference will be given to a student with financial need. ~Academic achievement and work experience are also considered. ~Applications are available in the guidance office. ~Complete applications are due to guidance by
January 15th.

B. Davis Scholarship--$1000 scholarship available to juniors and seniors. ~Applicant must submit an essay to the donor. For more information, visit www.studentawardsearch.com/scholarships.htm.

The Burger King McLamore Foundation offers scholarships to high school seniors, BURGER KING employees, their dependent children, spouses, or domestic partners. Deadline to apply is January 10th, 2013. ~Website is: www.bkmclamorefoundation.org/WhatWeDo/ScholarsProgram~~

BigSun Scholarship: All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of their sport. Deadline is June 21, 2013. To apply go to http://www.bigsunathletics.com.

Veteran Affairs Scholarships:~Email from Debra Conn at the Cleveland County Veterans Services here in Shelby. The NCDVA offers full tuition scholarships to eligible children of deceased, disabled or POW/MIA combat veterans. The deadline for some of the scholarships is March 1, 2013. She requests if you have a student who is the child of a veteran and you believe they might be eligible for the NCDVA Scholarship, please have them or their veteran parent contact their office. The office can make the determination of whether or not they meet the eligibility criteria. If they determine eligibility, they will set up an appointment to meet with the student and their parent(s) to complete all of the application forms and to complete a one-on-one interview with the student. Aspiring Animation Professional--$1000 scholarship for students interested in pursuing an animation career path at an accredited post-secondary school or college.  Application and more information is available online at www.animationcareerreview.com.  Deadline to apply is June 1.

NFIC Young Entrepreneur Award--Award available to high school seniors who operate their own small business.  Application and more information is available online at www.NFIB.com/YEA.  Deadline to apply is December 17.

Ronald McDonald House Charities--Scholarship available for students planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college, university, or technical school.  Application is available at www.rmhc.org.  Go to website and click on "What We Do" and then click on "Scholarships."  Students in our county are eligible to apply for "RMHC Scholars". Scholarship criteria considers financial need, leadership, community service, and GPA.  Application deadline is December 20.   

Elks Foundation Most Valuable Student--Scholarship available to seniors planning to attend a four year college or university.  Academics, Leadership, and Need will be considered.  Applications are available  online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars   Completed applications are due to Mrs. Martin by November 30.  Please note that my due date is earlier than the application specifies.  A member from our local Elks Lodge will pick up the completed applications from me.  

AXA Achievement Scholarships--for outstanding students who are active in their community and who have led a project that benefits others.  Application and more information is available online at www.axa-achievement.com  Deadline to apply is December 1.

NC Hispanic College Fund--offers scholarships for graduating NC seniors of Hispanic background (one parent must be fully Hispanic or both parents must be half Hispanic).  For more information and applications visit www.theNCSHP.org.  Applications must be received by January 15.

BigSun Scholarship--scholarship to senior athlete planning to attend college. Application is available at www.bigsunathletics.com    Deadline for completed application is June 21.

Wake Forest University--offers the Presidential Scholarship for Distinguished Achievement for students who possess exceptional talents is art, dance, debate, music, and theatre.  Application is available online at www.wfu.edu/finaid/presidential.html.  Application deadline is December 1.  Wake also offers the William Louis Poteat scholarship for competitive need-based residents of NC who are active in a Baptist church.  Application requires nomination by your church.  For nomination form and more information, visit www.wfu.edu/poteatwl.html

If you are seriously considering Wofford College, please see Mrs. Martin in guidance by Thursday, Oct.4 if you would like to be considered for the Wofford Scholars.  You must have 1250 (Read + Math) SAT or 28 on ACT.
 

The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship – valued at over $50,000 at Davidson College.  Burns may select one nominee for competition.  If you would like to be considered, sign the Blue Book in guidance by Nov.1.

Healthcare Career Day  is on Saturday, October 13, 2012 in the Education Center located at Gaston Memorial Hospital. This will be drop in from 10:00am-1:00pm. This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn more about healthcare careers. The Susan G. Komen Scholarship - $10,000 scholarship per year for up to four years of   undergraduate study.  These awards aid college students facing significant financial burdens due to the loss of a parent (or guardian) to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger.  Applicants must plan to attend a State funded university such as a UNC system college (ex. UNC-Charlotte, Western Carolina, etc.).  Minimum 2.8 GPA, community service, financial need, and demonstrated leadership are considered.  For an application and more information visit www.komen.org/scholarship.  Deadline is October 15th, 2012.

Seniors can pick up school nomination applications for the Morehead Cain Scholarship at UNC Chapel Hill.  The deadline to return these to guidance is Monday, September 17.  Based on the completed applications, the scholarship committee will select three students who will compete as Burns’ nominees.  Other students can self-nominate if they wish to.

Seniors can pick up school nomination applications for the Park Scholarship at NC State University.  The deadline to return these to guidance is Monday, September 17.  Based on the completed applications, the scholarship committee will select two students who will represent Burns’ as its nominees.   Other students can self-nominate if they wish to.

Bryan Scholars at Davidson College – Athletes with outstanding academic records, strong leaders in class and their sport and are impact players at the NCAA Division I level.  Players in 18 of the 21 varsity programs are eligible.  Football and men’s and women’s basketball are not eligible.  Sign the Blue Book if you are interested no later than Sept. 17.  Burns may nominate a male and female.

UNC Charlotte Levine Scholarship pays full tuition, room and board, a new laptop computer and four summer experiences.  Students interested need to sign the Blue Book to receive a nomination form.  They anticipate that successful candidates will have an unweighted grade point average of 3.8 – 4.0 and score 1800 – 2400 on the three combined sections of the SAT or 29 – 36 on the ACT composite (writing is required).~  Please print your email clearly and check it because the scholarship material will be sent directly to you.  The deadline to return nomination forms to guidance is Oct. 8.

NC State University School of Textiles offers scholarships to students going into the major of textiles.  These are $10,000 per year with an additional $7500 for enrichment.  A new scholarship offered this year is the ITT Centennial Scholarship valued at $20,000 per year.  To be considered as one of two nominees from Burns you must sign the Blue Book in guidance by Oct. 23.
