SUBJECT: ESL BOOK STUDY: 99 Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Language Learners with SIOP Model by MaryEllen Vogt and Jana Echevarria. FOR: Pre-K-12 grade Classroom Teachers This book Study will provide teachers with strategies to teach LEP and at risk students. It will consist of 5 interactive sessions completed by First Class e-mail, at your own pace (NO MEETINGS). Participants will receive 1.0 Reading renewal credit and a copy of the book. Moving Research into Classrooms: Practice Guides on Adolescent Literacy
We invite you to register for the 2009 University of Oregon, Center on Teaching and Learning Fall Conference Moving Research into Classrooms: Practice Guides on Adolescent Literacy, ELL Strategies, K-8 Mathematics, and RTI for K-3 Reading. The conference will take place October 27-28, 2009, at The Governor Hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon.
This highly-anticipated conference will feature both nationally prominent researchers--Drs. Russell Gersten, David Chard, Michael Kamil, Timothy Shanahan, Joe Dimino, Sylvia Linan-Thompson and Scott Baker--as well as highly successful consultants and practitioners including Dr. Kevin Feldman and Dr. Maria Elena Arguelles. The two-day conference is built around four separate strands, each focusing on one of the topic-specific Practice Guides that the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has issued.
Our conference website provides detailed information on each of the four strands, conference speakers and registration information. The conference offers discounts for multiple registrants from the same school in order to encourage team attendance and team planning. ARRA Grants Help Bring Technology to Schools
Thirty-one North Carolina public schools, spread across 12 school districts, will be able to purchase hardware and software to enhance their media and technology programs thanks to their recent receipt of the Enhancing Education Through Technology and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act competitive grants. In addition, these schools will receive significant professional development to ensure that staff is integrating technology effectively into classroom instruction so that students will have access to 21st century learning experiences. The Cleveland County Arts Council now have the annual Artist-in-Schools Grant applications available.
ARTIST-IN-SCHOOLS GRANTS AVAILABLE Teachers and administrators don’t miss this opportunity to apply for funds to bring creative art programs into your classroom!
The Cleveland County Arts Council will accept applications from all teachers and school administrators who work for the Cleveland County School System for projects, which integrate the arts into the standard course of study, or for art programs, which enhance those studies. Requests for funds must be submitted to the Arts Council on or before 5:00 pm Friday, October 9, 2009. The funds granted must be spent during the school year for which they are awarded. Follow up report forms must be returned to the Arts Council by June 15, 2010. Grant amounts will not exceed $500. Last year 15 wonderful projects in schools throughout the county were funded. Last year’s recipients are eligible to apply again this year.

Charles I. Dover Teacher Incentive Program The Charles I. Dover Teacher Incentive Program provides three $750 cash grants for creative and unique projects submitted by teachers and faculty members in the Cleveland County Schools. The grants are funded through the Greater Cleveland County Educational Foundation. One grant is award-ed to a teacher in grades K-5, one in Grades 6-12, and one in special pro-gram
areas. Examples of past winners are: Elementary Area • “Think Tank” - 4th grade math program to encourage students to become mathematical problem solvers Secondary
Area • A literary magazine published with student poetry, short stories, essays and non-fiction Special Program Area • C.O.R.E. - (Child Oriented Reading Experiences) - a program using music to emphasize phonics, rhyming words, and story songs to help low achieving and educationally disadvantaged 1st Graders form a foundation of literacy. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 16, 2009. Applications should be sent to Donna Carpenter, Director of Public Information, 130 South Post Road, Suite 2, Shelby, NC 28152. A committee of Foundation members and school administrators will select the three winners. Recipients of the grants will be recognized at the Novem-ber 12th, Foundation board

Free Grant for e Books from Sylvan Dell Publishing
Description: This grant is for a free, one-year (school year 2008/2009), site license (value $599) providing unlimited access to all 35 (soon to be 45) Sylvan Dell eBooks, featuring flipviewer technology with selectable English and Spanish text and audio. The license can be used on all school computers and may be placed on secure school websites, enabling students and their families to login and have access from their homes.
Eligibility: Grants will be awarded to one elementary school per district and are open to every district in the United States. To facilitate submission, individual schools may submit the grant application directly. Should more than one school from a single district apply, we will ask the district contact to make the selection. For our Private School friends not under district supervision, we will award licenses to the first 25 in each state.
