Once upon a time long, long ago before time was caught and put in clocks, in a time when magic was easier to find....there was a Story.
Do you mean like a book?
No, I mean like a story.
A book story.
No, a story-story...like the first stories.
One that falls in through your eye when you are staring up at the stars one night, or perhaps you swallowed it...or maybe it seeped in through your skin like air or water, or thick, warm scent of summer, or maybe you caught it like a cold from your great-great grandma or like a fish on a long line of truth...
Do you remember someone telling you a Story?

What's Going On In Our Room?!?
        9 weeks down.....3 more quarters to go! The first nine weeks was a great learning time for sixth graders. Most of them are now in the full swing of middle school, are better organized, and are reaping the benefits of good behavior and good grades. Let's keep up the good work and work towards everyone being on level and putting forth 100% effort!
        What are we doing in Language Arts??? We are going to be doing a short unit on outlaws. Students will learn about well known outlaws such as Billy the Kid, Jesse James, the Dalton Gang, and so on. As part of this unit, students will be writing watching a documentary, reading articles about these outlaws, and will be making WANTED posters and writing an editorial about a specific outlaw. These projects should be lots of fun and a great way to learn about the "bad guys" of The Old West!
        We are also beginning our first novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. This is a great novel about an unlikely friendship and a child with a terminal disability. Be sure to ask your child all about it. While reading the novel, we will also be studying elements of Fiction such as Characterization, Foreshadowing, Suspense, Climax, Problem-Resolution, and describing the setting. Students usually love this novel!
        We will be starting a new Spelling and Vocabulary unit dealing with the words that students will encounter while reading the novel. Students will be expected to study these words in order to pass a test on them on a weekly basis. Along with tests on Vocabulary, students will be completing numerous projects related to the novel.
        I have included below a list of books that children enjoy reading each year. I have most of these books in my classroom library. Our school library and the public libraries in Cleveland Co. should carry these titles. They can also be purchased at any bookstore!
        Please feel free to contact me at any time, or stop by to see your child's work. Enjoy the photos of the students on the photos page!

A Note About Reading Renaissance (RR)
Reading Renaissance (RR) counts for a significant part of each student's grade. Each child sets his or her own book goal based on what he or she thinks they can read in the nine week grading period. RR folders are kept in my classroom but students are allowed to view them at any time to check his or her progress and book level. Please make sure that your child is reading at least 30 minutes each night at home. You can also help your child by asking him or her a few questions about what they are reading.
RR Requirements for 2nd Nine Weeks
* book cannot be below the student's reading level
* RR Cut-Off will be mid-January
