Course Description:

Seventh grade social studies is a study of the world from a geographic, historical, and cultural perspective.  This new course allows for a comparative exploration of cultures all across the globe focusing on major global themes (1.Themes of Geography and Tools of History, 2. A Cultural Institutions Overview, 3. The Emergence of the First Global Age, 4. An Age of Revolutions: Political and Industrial Revolutions Imperialism, 5. A Half Century of Crisis and Achievement, 6. 20th Century Conflicts and Order, and 7. A Move Towards Interdependence and Globalization).

***The new Essential Standards will emphasize the following five strands: history, geography and environmental literacy, civics and government, economics and financial literacy, and culture.  
Essential Standards:
7.H.1 Use historical thinking to analyze various modern societies.
7.H.2 Understand the implications of global interactions.
7.G.1 Understand how geography, demographic trends, and environmental conditions shape modern societies and regions.
7.G.2 Apply the tools of a geographer to understand modern societies and regions.
7.E.1 Understand the economic activities of modern societies and regions.
7.C & G.1 Understand the development of government in modern societies and regions.
7.C.1 Understand how cultural values influence relationships between individuals, groups, and political entities in modern societies and regions.

Student Role:

Students will be expected to participate in classroom discussions and
activities each and everyday. Also, students are responsible for their own personal learning and success with the teacher as a guide.  Students will be given every opportunity
to be successful this year!

Social Studies Supply List:
·a 1 inch binder  *This binder will be shared with the Science classroom.

*Make-up work is the responsibility of the student.  Students have five days to make up any work that they were absent for.
*Grading Policy for Late Work: Each day it is late is one letter grade (- 10 points each day).  
For Example:    1 Day Late      Highest Grade is a 90
2 Days Late     Highest Grade is an 80
Class Procedures:
  • Students will come into class quietly, sit down and begin warm-up on board.
  • Students will be prepared for class.
  • Students will raise their hands and wait to be called on if they would like to speak.
  • Students will show respect for CMS faculty and staff, as well as other students.
  • Students will follow all team, CMS, and Cleveland County Rules.
Consequences:
-Warning (Yellow Card)
-1st step (Red Card) Silent Lunch
-After 3 red cards in a 3 week time period, students are dropped a level.
***Automatic Level Drops will occur for the following: continuous disruptions, refusal to follow directions or work, bounced to another teacher’s room, or sent to Chill-Out.
****Automatic Office Referrals will be written for the following: blatant disrespect, major insubordination, fights, or violations of the CCS Code of Conduct.

Incentives:
*Mini Rewards every 3 weeks             *Big Reward at the end of each 9 weeks
Binder:
Students will bring their binders to class everyday.  The purpose of this binder is to help them keep their work neat and organized.  It should hold loose-leaf paper on rings, and have the student’s first and last name as well as the class period written on the front.  
Remember:

*It is your responsibility to:
        Turn in Homework (Every Thursday).
        Study for Tests/ Quizzes (Usually on Friday).
        Turn in Classwork.
        Turn in Weekly Warm-ups (1 sheet of paper) (Every Friday).
        Make up work when absent.
